DSOBA Legal Chapter Dinner with Hon. Henry Litton, GBM, CBE, QC, JP

To celebrate our fourth anniversary, we are delighted to announce that the DSOBA Legal Chapter Dinner will take place at The Chinese Club, 8th floor, Chinese Club Building, Nos. 21-23, Connaught Road on Tuesday, 15th November 2016 (6.30 pm onwards).

This year, we shall be very pleased and honoured to have with us Hon. Henry Litton (Class of 51), Former Permanent Judge of the Court of Final Appeal (CFA), as our guest speaker.

The Honourable Henry Litton, GBM, CBE, QC, JP:-

Born in Hong Kong, Mr. Litton’s family goes back three generations as Hong Kong belongers.  He was educated at Diocesan Boys’ School during his early years before he moved to England and studied at King’s College, Taunton and Merton College Oxford, where he graduated with honours in jurisprudence in 1956.

Mr. Litton was called to the English Bar in 1959 and admitted to practise in Hong Kong in 1960.  He was further called to the Inner Bar and appointed Queen’s Counsel in 1970.  He also served as Chairman of the Bar Association of Hong Kong from 1971 to 1973, from 1977 to 1980 and again from 1983 to 1985.

Before his appointment to the Bench, he acted as deputy judge of the Supreme Court of Hong Kong (subsequently known as the High Court since 1997) on many occasions and served as the chairman of many statutory boards and tribunals, such as the Board of Review (Inland Revenue Ordinance) and the Appeal Board Panel (Town Planning).  He was also the Legal Adviser to the Basic Law Consultative Committee between 1987 and 1990, and was the Adviser to the Hong Kong & Macau Office on Hong Kong affairs in 1992.

Mr. Litton was directly elevated from the Bar to the bench in 1992 as a Justice of Appeal in the Court of Appeal, the first of such appointment in Hong Kong.  He became the Vice-President of the Court of Appeal in 1995.  In 1997, he was further appointed Permanent Judge of the Court of Final Appeal when China resumed its sovereignty over Hong Kong.

In 1999, Mr. Litton was appointed an Honorary Bencher of the Gray’s Inn – which is one of the four Inns of Court in London and its Honorary Benchers are strictly limited.  He retired in 2000 and had become Non-Permanent Judge of the CFA for 15 years until 2015.  Currently, as an Honorary Professor of Law in the Faculty of Law at the University of Hong Kong, Mr. Litton continues contributing to the development of the law in Hong Kong.

Mr. Litton has kindly agreed to share his career expertise and life experiences with us at the upcoming dinner.  Please do not miss this very exclusive and valuable opportunity to meet with one of our most distinguished old boys.

Annual Dinner with President of The Law Society Mr. Stephen Hung on Monday 19th October 2015

Dear Legal Chapter members,

It is almost one year since the Annual Dinner of the DSOBA Legal Chapter last year. To celebrate our three- years anniversary, there will be dinner and drinks at The Chinese Club, 8th floor, Chinese Club Building, Nos. 21-23, Connaught Road on Monday, 19 October 2015 (6:30 pm onwards).

We are honored and pleased that Mr. Stephen Hung (class of 1977), President of The Law Society of Hong Kong, has agreed to be our guest speaker at the forthcoming Annual Dinner function.



Stephen W.S. Hung:-

Mr. Hung is currently a partner of Messrs. Li & Partners. Besides being President of the Law Society of Hong Kong, he is also Chairman of the Legal Education Committee.

Mr. Hung serves on the Council of the Duty Lawyer Service; PCLL Academic Board of the University of Hong Kong, Chinese University of Hong Kong and City University of Hong Kong and the Steering Committee on the Provision of Legal Advice for Litigants in Person. In his personal capacity, Mr. Hung serves on the Higher Rights Assessment Board; the Hong Kong Examinations and Assessment Authority and Law Reform Committee and Sub-committee on Causing or Allowing the Death of a Child.

As with regular dinner gatherings organized by the Law Society to allow practicing members to express their views to the President and his council, Stephen has kindly agreed to this exclusive informal sharing session with DBS old boys to exchange views on any matter relating to the Law Society of Hong Kong or any topic affecting the legal profession. DSOBA Legal Chapter - Anniversary, Dinner Get Together and ….. CPD”

It is almost one year since the inauguration of the DSOBA Legal Chapter. To celebrate our one year anniversary (well, slightly in advance), there will be dinner and drinks at the Glass Pavilion of DBS on Friday, 18 October 2013 (6:30 pm onwards).


For those solicitors in need of CPD points (yes – end of CPD year coming up soon), Mr Alfonso Fung (class of 76) and Mr Carl Yuen (class of 92) have kindly agreed to present the following topics over dinner and drinks:


1. Taxation of Cost Post CJR (Alfonso);

2. Introducing Road Traffic Law (Carl).

2 CPD points are being applied for. The CPD will be free of charge. Dinner (buffet) and drinks (soft drinks) will be HKD 300.

Legal Chapter inauguration

The objectives of the Legal Chapter are :

1. To foster better networking and communication amongst old boys practicing in the legal profession or working in a legal environment and deepening our common bond ;

2. To make available a contact database to facilitate access by other OBA members who wish to engage the services of old boys in the legal profession;

3. To set up mentor/mentee programs to provide guidance to current school boys of DBS interested to enter the legal profession including giving presentations to current boys to explain to them what legal work entails;

4. To promote and facilitate short-term internships or other placement opportunities for current school boys of DBS or arrange trainee-contracts or pupilage for boys who are law-students interested in entering into the legal profession;

5. To disseminate from time to time information, personal news up-dates, case precedents that the Legal Chapter in its absolute discretion deems relevant or of material interest to members ;

6. To arrange from time to time such social activities, seminars or invitation-only events as deem appropriate to foster closer bonding of its members; 

7. To arrange or otherwise facilitate cross cultural and cross professional exchanges and networking with other old boys working within Hong Kong and in other jurisdictions; 

8. To set up Rules & Regulations for the Legal Chapter.

We are delighted to share great news that the DSOBA Legal Chapter has just been formed for DSOBA members that are active in, or retired from, the legal industry around the world to network, share news and ideas, cross-refer, offer internships and deepen our common bond through social activities, talks and invitation-only special events. Members of the judiciary, bench and both branches of our profession, including in-house counsels, law costs draftsmen, trainees/pupils, law school students and paralegals are all welcomed.
