The Honourable Mr Justice PANG Kin-kee,
Judge of the Court of First Instance of the High Court
(Class of 1964)

Mr Justice Pang was at DBS from 1957-1964. He was awarded a Bachelor of Arts degree from the Queen’s University, Canada. He was called to the Bar of England and Wales in 1978, and was admitted to the Hong Kong Bar in 1979 and the Bar of the State of Victoria, Australia in 1983. Mr Justice Pang was in private practice before joining the Judiciary as Magistrate in May 1985. He was appointed District Judge in August 1987 and Judge of the High Court in January 1997.
He is the Chairman of Electoral Affairs Commission, a Panel Judge of the Interception of Communications and Surveillance Ordinance, Chairman of the Advisory Committee on Post-service Employment of Civil Servants, Advisory Committee on Post-Office Employment for Principal Officials and the Society of Rehabilitation and Crime Prevention, Hong Kong.

Mr Justice Pang is a member of the DBS School Council and is the Chairman of the Primary Division Sub-committee.

Let’s play!
We had a great turnout at the Games Day this year: 75 adults and 54 children showed up. The annual family event was organized jointly by DSOBA and DBS Athletics Club. It was held on the new school track with the new Clock Tower as the backdrop. The facilities provided an excellent environment for this occasion.

Our old boys and their family members participated enthusiastically in the various games scheduled for the afternoon. As usual we had games for all ages: individual sprints, obstacle races, spoon-and-egg races and 1-lap runs. Several heats were set up for each event, and the nursery-kindergarten group turned out to be the largest of all age groups, with 7 heats scheduled for the individual 40M event alone! The 1-lap run was open to all ages, and it was really exciting to see our littlest “stars” completing one whole lap with such confidence and courage!

Everyone had such a great time that we ran overtime by over an hour and we had to cancel the last 2 family games in order to allow time for the prize presentation. Rudy Chan (‘79) and Willie Kung (‘77) kindly presented the medals to the winners of each event. The results of the various events are as follows:

Dear Members of DSOBA,

In reviewing the success in the past events, special thanks must be given to the old boys who supported those activities.

Since career planning is an ongoing process through which young people can have more understanding about their interests, personalities, families, schools, communities and world in making their career and lifestyle choices, the Careers Office is now proposing a new Mentoring Scheme.

We would like to invite our old boys to be the mentors of our Lower 6 and Upper 6 students. During the year, each mentor would be the careers-advisor of 4 to 5 current Form 6 boys. These mentors may only need to contact their mentees by email or meet them once or twice a year to give advice for their careers planning. For example, the mentor might give advice and share his own experience on the careers choices, university subject selections, allow the students to have a one-day or half-day attachment to his office, etc.

After a morning of rainfall, dark clouds made way for a beautiful afternoon of sunshine and warm summer breezes, perfect conditions for our Annual Poolside Party. This year, DSOBA members and their families were offered free admission to the event. Our members responded enthusiastically: 43 adults and 21 children showed up to enjoy a day of water fun.

The afternoon began with water polo. Our DSOBA President, Victor Tan (’80), led a group of young players to a friendly match. While the water polo teams were slugging it out at one side of the pool, the younger children showed off their aqua-basketball skills, shooting hoops from the water at the other side of the pool. They were challenged to a hoop-shooting contest, where the winners went away with prizes like water guns and inflatable ride-ons.

The Poolside Party was a great opportunity for old boys to catch up with each other and to meet new friends. Attendees represented classes ranging from the 50’s to the 90’s. It was truly amazing that even though we were from such a broad spectrum of classes, we all felt the same strong sense of belonging to the DBS family.

As always, food was an important item on the agenda for every Poolside Party. We would like to give special thanks to Alvin Li (’86) for generously sponsoring the food and to Albert Cheung (’83) for kindly arranging the catering this year. After an exciting water polo game and red-hot hoop shooting, everybody was hungry for a big feast. The grilled salmon salad, curry lobster balls, Swiss chicken wings and baked seafood rice did not disappoint.

Of course, we did not let our members and guests off the hook that easily. After recharging their batteries at the buffet table, the real work began: the swimming competition! Five races were held, according to age. Our youngest stars were only 5 years old; with their dads cheering by their side, they finished a 25-meter lap with flying colours. The older kids also participated enthusiastically in the event. It was really exciting to watch them swim with such speed and confidence—it must be the inherited DBS spirit! The last race was reserved for the old boys. Again we proved to be the “best of the best”, competing fiercely for this year’s “bragging rights”.

The party ended on high notes. We were honoured to have our Headmaster, Mr. Terence Chang (’65), present medals to the contestants and take pictures with all of us. Last but not least, we followed our poolside party tradition of eating watermelons, although by then everybody was too full to have a watermelon-eating competition! The party went on until dusk and we all went home with a nice tan, a content stomach and happy memories.

The Annual Poolside Party is a wonderful family event and a great old boy reunion in a casual setting. We all hope you can join us next year for more fun in the sun!

DSOBA Golf Day - February 17, 2006
Our annual golf day was held at the beautiful Kau Sai Chau public golf course on Friday, February 17. There were a total of 29 participants of which 16 were old boys and 13 were guests, of the 13 guests 4 were ladies.

To make the event more enjoyable, all par 3's were marked with a prize for closest to pin and hole 17 was marked for 2 longest drive prizes, one for men and another for women.

In order to avoid incorrect handicap reporting and to give everyone a chance of winning, scoring for the tournament is based on the New New Preoria format, whereby 6 holes are drawn and discarded after the tournament and the scores from the remaining 12 holes are used to calculate the individual's handicap for the day, which is then subtracted from the player's gross score for his 18 hole round to decide the winners.

All participants were eligible for the champion, 1^st runner up and 2^nd runner up trophies. The DSOBA President’s Cup trophy, to be presented at our AGM, is reserved for DSOBA member.

Conditions on the South Course where we had our tournament was ideal, the day was cool and breezy and to add to the challenge, the wind caused some problems with a few of the holes. The day began with the first tee-off at 12:09 and ended with a sumptuous dinner buffet and prize giving ceremony.

DSOBA 2005 - 2006 Tennis Tournament

This year's tennis tournament adopted a new format by combining both singles and doubles play similar to the Davis Cup. Unlike the single-round knock-out format, it allowed players one more round of play and created team competition in a friendly atmosphere.

Team Spirit” had players including Clement Lee, Jerry Chang, Louis Wong, Selwyn Chan, Roger Wong and William Wan while“Team Challenge” had players including Ronnie Cheng, Leung Sze Wai, Sammy Tam, Patrick Chan, Eugene Chow and Vincent Cheung.

In the new format, our “NSS” (Not-So-Scientific) seeding system initially ranked the players on each team from seeds 1 to 6. The first round matches had each seed play a total of four games against their corresponding rival seed. In the second round’s cross-over matches, the Number 1 seeds again played four games against the Number 2’s while the Number 3’s played against the number 4’s, and finally the Number 5’s against the Number 6’s. Three doubles matches of 8 games pro-set were to follow after the singles. In the end the team with the higher total of games won would be declared the tournament’s champion.

Team Spirit was up at 14 against 10 at the end of the first round singles with convincing victories from Clement and Roger. Ronnie and Sammy of Team Challenge then scored well in their cross-over singles helping to narrow the gap slightly. By the end of the cross-over singles round, Team Spirit had 27 games versus Team Challenge’s 21. With the doubles left to play, it was hardly a foregone conclusion. Both teams were strategizing their line-up’s hoping to maximize the chance of victory but as luck would have it, rain came soon after the first pair of doubles began play and the tournament had to be suspended.

With the Chinese New Year holidays at the end of February, it took a while until March 26 to resume the doubles matches. Unfortunately we were only able to gather enough players for two matches due the many reasons. This time however, Team Challenge with the help of Sammy, Patrick, Eugene and Vincent caught up with two victories and evened up the score at 37 games apiece.

It was only fitting to bring out the big guns for the final showdown. With the championship title on the line, the top seeds of both teams – Clement / Louis, Ronnie / Sze-Wai made their commitment to slug it out on April 30 under a revised format of best-of-three tie-break sets.

In the end, Clement/Louis claimed victory with a convincing score 6-0, 6-1. Fresh off his campaign at the April’s Hong Kong Nationals, Clement was still as much the dominant player as ever. The final score had hardly done justice to the valiant effort put out by Ronnie and Sze-Wai.

On behalf of the DSOBA, I must also appreciate all the players for their wonderful spirit and love of the game to produce the exciting see-sawing battle sprinkled with fun and camaraderie.

The individual names of the winning team will be engraved on the President’s Cup and souvenir trophies for each player will be presented at the May 11 AGM in Central. Hope to see you all there!
