I am saddened by the news of the passing away of our dear Headmaster, Jimmy Lowcock. May the Almighty receives him in His arms and gives support to Jimmy’s family. Though we feel sad at the passing away of a great Headmaster, we treasured all the fond memories and good things he had done for the school and DBS boys.
I was encouraged by him to try to take on some sports (high jump) while a student at DBS and to study at HKU. This was of course the 60’s and we weare so fond of him at that time. We developed a ‘working friendship’ as from the late 70’s when I became head of St. Christopher’s Home and a School Council member of DPS. Jimmy was very involved in the school then and we held our school council meetings in his office at DBS. His advice and knowledge on education was so vast and I learned from his experience as a first-class educator. He would give comments on government’s education policies and had no reservation in criticizing the bureaucratic ways of the operations. I do think DBS boys have inherited from Jimmy the attitude of questioning and ‘think beyond the box’. Jimmy would not reject request for good deeds as he was very helpful in the fund raising for St. James’ Settlement in the building project in the early 80’s. I have the privilege to expand this good deed when I became the Director of the Settlement in 1990 and we are now building our second building in Kennedy Road.
Jimmy had left us but he had leave behind a legacy full of good things: He was a good educator, a great headmaster, a sports promoter, full of love for the School (DBS) and his students. May he rest in peace.
Yours respectful,
Michael K C Lai
