Class

News of Class year.

Hello DBS and ALL

From the pages ancient history I emerge  when I perchance through the good offices of modern technology I happen upon the DBS memorial plaque at DBS
George She, good friend of father's, was the person who arranged for me to be boarder at DBS at the age of ten when I was getting a little too "old" to be at St.Stephen Girl's College with the girls and all that.  Those were happy days with CBR Sargent MA as Headmaster, there were masters Mr. Prue, Mr Thomas (our class master) Mr Crawford and the Matron of course who was strict and kept us all disciplined.

We ran the big field - 100yard sprints may be, played marbles, tip top, and ate at the dining hall, I slept at the small boy's dormitory with Denham Crary as the prefect watching us.  Inspections at night came often from Mr. Monks.  We were caught playing cards under the blanket a few times leading to the headmaster's cane on Saturday morning.   The registrar was a Mr. Mugford.

Later Rev George She also arranged for me to transfer to be boarder at St. Stephen's Boys at Stanley.

The last time I saw Rev She was when he came down from Bristol to London.   I was a surgical registrar in East Anglia.  I still ruminate over our last reunion, talking about all the past and my gratitude to him- a wonderful wonderful person.   His brother “Willy” I remembered him in his dashing RAF uniform immediately post war.

And then, I shall go back into History again.

Jack H. M. Kwaan, MD,FACS

Obituary – Adam Butt (68)

It is with great sadness to announce the passing of Adam Butt Sr. (class of 1968) after a 10 month courageous fight against cancer at the age of 60. Adam was born on the 4th of May, 1950 and left us on the 11th of November, 2010 at 10:22pm.

Adam was a stellar athlete, amusing classmate and a “rascal” at DBS.  Adam had many roles in his life time. He was a good son, a caring brother, a trusted friend, a hard worker, a loving husband, a brilliant father and the undisputed gold medalist of occasional temper tantrum.

His role may have changed during the different stages of his life, but the characteristics that define who he was remained unchanged. He was a man with unquestionable work ethnics and integrity. His charisma, warmth and sense of humor have enriched the lives of those who were privileged to have known him. His determination, competitiveness, resilience, and amazing display of “balls” were clearly demonstrated in his final battle with a notorious disease. These are the characteristics that defined this special man that we all know as Adam Butt Sr.   No doubt his classmates, friends, associates, relatives and family will cherish his legacy and always remember him in his light.

He is survived by his wife, Helen, and son, Adam Jr.

Michael Chang (75) wins election Santa Clara

Class of 1975 would like to congratulate their classmate Michael Chang for defeating two strong candidates on November 2, 2010 to become a Trustee of the Santa Clara County Board of Education, which covers eight cities in the most affluent part of Silicon Valley.  Michael won with 51% of the close to 66,000 votes, leaving his opponents with 37% and 12% respectively.  Michael attributed his victory to the 150 active volunteers and over 300 financial supporters, and he was grateful toward DBS classmates and other old boys who supported him throughout.

Michael is Department Chair and a professor of the Dept. of East-Asian Studies at De Anza College in Cupertino.  He was a former member and president of the Cupertino School Board, a Cupertino City Councilman, and he served as Mayor of Cupertino for two terms, being the first Asian to become the city’s mayor.
