Obituary – Maurice Siu

Dear Old Boys and Friends of DBS,

Maurice Siu Cheuk Ming (nickname 燒雞, Class of 1989), 42, passed away peacefully on Friday, September 21, 2012, at Kwong Wah Hospital with his family present.

Maurice had been suffering with germ cell cancer for the past three years.  He had bravely confronted and fought the disease until he succumbed to cancer and drifted off to be with the Lord last Friday.  Maurice is survived by his beloved wife, Irene Fung and his adored 2-year-old daughter Siu Chuen Yan.  He is also survived by his parents and several siblings.

Maurice was born on October 11, 1969 and was the eighth of the ten children.  Maurice was an outstanding track athlete during his years in DBS.  He broke several records in long and short distance run, in particular, his record in Division A 1500-meter long run had not been beaten for more than two decades.  After graduation, Maurice had been actively participating in the DSOBA and was an ex-General Committee member.  Maurice received his Bachelor’s Degree in Education from the University of Hong Kong and had spent over 10 years teaching math and physical education in different primary and secondary schools in Hong Kong.  Despite the fact that Maurice had been battling cancer in recent years, as a Christian, he still travelled around sharing his own experiences, hoping to enlighten others to have faith, courage and persistence in time of adversity.

The following is the arrangement of the Funeral Service for Maurice:

·         Funeral Service – a Funeral Service will be held at the All Saints’ Cathedral (address: No. 11 Pak Po Street, Mongkok) at 2:30pm on Saturday, October 20, 2012.  The Very Reverend Samson Fan will be officiating.  The family will receive relatives, friends as well as all members of the DBS family at the Service.  Kindly refrain from driving as parking space around the Cathedral is limited.

·         Cremation – the Funeral Service will be followed by cremation which will take place at Cape Collinson Crematorium.  Free shuttle bus service is available to pick up guests from the All Saints’ Cathedral to the crematorium.  A return shuttle bus will bring guests back to the Cathedral after the cremation.

·         Repast – a repast will be held at Sportful Garden Chinese Restaurant 陶源酒家 at Stanford Hotel 仕德福酒店at 5:00pm on the same day.  Stanford Hotel is situated right opposite to the Cathedral on Soy Street.  For those who are planning to attend the repast, kindly send an email to deansamsonfan@gmail.com to confirm your attendance.

·         Sharing Contribution – in memory of Maurice, the family is initiating a call for old boys and friends to share their words of condolence, memories and thoughts about Maurice.  Please email your sharing to deansamsonfan@gmail.com on or before Monday, October 8, 2012.  The sharing received will be featured in the service booklets.

·         Donations – in lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider donations be made to the Hong Kong Cancer Fund (香港癌症基金會).  Envelopes for donations will also be available at the Cathedral.

Farid Samy (75) – Obituary

Our dear friend Farid Samy passed away at York Hospital in Toronto on April 7, 2012 at 3:30PM. As it was his wish to have a Muslim funeral, services took place the following day starting at 11:30AM with viewing/visitation at the Mosque (Islamic Foundation of Toronto), then prayers at noon, and finally burial at York Cemetery (Section 20/Plot 1392) by 1PM.

The following is an excerpt from Farouk Samy’s (his older brother) message:

“I wanted to let you know that my brother, Farid passed away peacefully last Saturday April 7. He never recovered from his coma. It would have been 2 years this month in a coma state. Our family is grateful that his suffering has now ended. Farid was buried Sunday in accordance with Islamic rites which required burial to happen within 24 hours. I miss him and I am sure you too as well. Farid hadn’t really changed from the time he left DBS to the time before he had the coma. He was still the Farid you all knew him – fun, joker, life of the party. He always reminded me that there is a child within us no matter how old we are. I hope you all have fond memories of him.”

Obituary – Adam Butt (68)

It is with great sadness to announce the passing of Adam Butt Sr. (class of 1968) after a 10 month courageous fight against cancer at the age of 60. Adam was born on the 4th of May, 1950 and left us on the 11th of November, 2010 at 10:22pm.

Adam was a stellar athlete, amusing classmate and a “rascal” at DBS.  Adam had many roles in his life time. He was a good son, a caring brother, a trusted friend, a hard worker, a loving husband, a brilliant father and the undisputed gold medalist of occasional temper tantrum.

His role may have changed during the different stages of his life, but the characteristics that define who he was remained unchanged. He was a man with unquestionable work ethnics and integrity. His charisma, warmth and sense of humor have enriched the lives of those who were privileged to have known him. His determination, competitiveness, resilience, and amazing display of “balls” were clearly demonstrated in his final battle with a notorious disease. These are the characteristics that defined this special man that we all know as Adam Butt Sr.   No doubt his classmates, friends, associates, relatives and family will cherish his legacy and always remember him in his light.

He is survived by his wife, Helen, and son, Adam Jr.

Obituary - Teacher Ting-ming Tsang  (Apr-09)

From: "Eddy Tsang" <>
Date: April 14, 2009 11:00:39 PM GMT-04:00
To: <Undisclosed-Recipient:;>
Subject: My dad's funeral

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, friends and relatives,

Ting Ming Tsang, my beloved dad, passed away, peacefully, yesterday morning in  Scarborough  Grace  Hospital at the age of 98.

He felt unwell in the evening of April 4 and we sent him to ER that night. After tests and imaging, he was diagnosed of pancreatic infection and therefore was hospitalized. The doctors did not treat him with medications other than those he routinely takes, but he was hooked up with IV, and urine catheter because for the past months his kidneys had been deteriorating. Except for fatigue and constipation he was just alright then. The next day, although the infection numbers rose substantially, his condition was stable, and we were relieved that he was already on the hospital bed. The third day he started to recover. By the forth day he was unhooked of the IV and catheter and was able to eat solid food. Everybody was so proud of him! Nevertheless on Thursday he felt a little short of breath and oxygen was given to him occasionally. It turned worse on Friday when he had to be treated with asthma medication as well as on 24 hour oxygen. Saturday night was most critical, but he was fairly conscious. Other than feeling weak and short of breath, he had not complained of pain. It must be mentioned that when he was first hospitalized, in view of his age the family has already confirmed with him his wish that in case of emergency he would choose comfort over reviving. It was with this baseline that increased but optimal dosage of drug was given to him the next day, and we knew that that day might probably be the best time to take my mom who, as you probably know, is not in sound health, to see him. At around 5:15 the following morning, the attending nurse called us to the hospital saying that my dad’s condition was no good and that he might not be able to make it this time. He was then pronounced dead at 5:40 am, dying peacefully of kidney failure.

My dad has accepted Christ on the second day he was in the hospital. He has told me not to worry about him in case he could not make out, because he would see us one day in heaven – we are so thankful for the merciful hands of the Lord!

The funeral will be held on Monday April 20 at  Elgin  Mills  Cemetery in  Richmond Hill . Visitation will start at 2 pm and Service at 3 pm. Rev. Phillip Man Tam Kwok of Scarborough Chinese Baptist Church has kindly agreed to officiate the Service.  Elgin  Mills  Cemetery is located at the south west corner of  Elgin Mills Road East and Hwy 404. There are entrances on both  Leslie Street and  Elgin Mills Road . The Chapel is in the main building.

The funeral is held on weekday when many of you will have to go to work. We apologize for not being able to arrange it during weekend. We shall of course understand those of you who cannot attend the funeral. In the circumstances, your silent prayer for us will suffice and be very much appreciated.

With kindest regards.

Eddy

17-Mar-09

According to the newspaper this morning, we have just lost another good DBS old boy, Chan Kwok Keung. We used to call him "波王" in DBS He was born with natural curly hair. Sometimes, you might see him in media press conference. If you are a Featherstone member or active in sports, then you must know this 波王, a very good in soccer player. Our Martin Lam "猴子" and Laurence Chan "田中", both Featherstone members would definitely be one of Mr. Chan's  close teammates in house soccer competition. SK Chan was also a Featherstone member but he was not good in soccer if compared with them. I was also  one of "波王" soccer teammates in some friendly school soccer matches with other schools in 1969 Centenary Year.

Our Philip already mentioned about the health problem of "波王". Mr. Chan was 55 and was a superintendent of HKSAR Police Force. Our deepest condolence to his family !

Regards,
 ALI C. S. LEE
Class Agent, Class of 73
